Birds and mammals of Manu
Introduction Forests, particularly those of tropical America, have long captivated the imagination of generations of restless and risk-seeking men. Some have been expert researchers, others irrepressible adventurers or passionate observers of flora and fauna. Today, this same desire to get close to nature drives visitors to seek out their own experience. Among the many places that Peru offers, Manu possesses the best conditions to begin to «get close to nature». Its diverse landscapes and climates as well as its well-deserved reputation as the most biodiverse place on Earth, makes Manu unforgettable. The eastern slope of the Andes is one of the most fascinating images of Manu. Between July and August, as one looks east at sunrise, the clouds flutter and swirl, creating capricious brush strokes of intense orange. A little lower down, the mountains are blanketed with the green of the cloud forest. Here, millions of branches and twisted trunks are concealed behind a fog so thick that even a Londoner would find it gloomy. The lakes of the rainforest, or «cochas», are worthy of postcards. On clear days, the blue sky and the great Amazonian trees are reflected by the waters like an enormous mirror. These are the lands of amazing animals, places to travel through on foot, calmly not hurriedly! |
